Friday Sept 30

One of my students was in costume today!

The details for the day. We did a fair length of reading today - we got to page 110 in the text, to the end of Chapter 13. We also got questions 8 and 10 for homework for Monday.

On Monday, by the way, we are going to take a look at the Theme Study. Don'tcha dare miss it!

Yeah, catching up a few ideas on this blog post that we have been reading about in the novel:

Well, the first thing was to show a "Jitterbug" video. I do not dance, so I'm not able to show how it goes. Here's a video on learning how to dance the jitterbug:

Thursday Sept 29

This is Peter Lorre. He does not hang out at The Lavender Bar
ok, this has been a weird day.

Weird.

In any case, we got to the end of Chapter 10, wherein Holden met the girls from "Seattle, Washington". He also mentions Radio City Music Hall, too. He also mentions Peter Lorre, a famous actor.

When I googled "RCMH Holden Caufield", this link came up. Oh, you have to click on that ... do it!

I encouraged my students to know the due date for Part One of the assignment due - it's Oct 6th, by the way.

Also, in conversation I mentioned the actor playing the lead role in this film:

By Heavens, at the posting of this post, it's on Netflix!

Today we talked a little about the due dates, and that the next few days are going to be odd. Wednesday is the School Mass day, Thursday is the OCA and Friday may be an odd day, too.

We also talked a little about the text and took up the homework.

We also read until page 70 and got question 6 for homework. Question 6 asks about Point of View, which is something which the class will be delving into tomorrow.

Monday Sept 26

“All right, all right, all right ….. “ Like the actor who keeps saying this, even though it is Monday, everything is going to be ok.

In any case, we took up homework, read the novel ... we got to the end of  Chapter 6 on Page 52.

Then we got questions 7 and 9 for homework.

Please note that the OCA on Wednesday is going to have a different schedule for this class.

I think.

Maybe.

Friday Sept 23

It was Friday ... a day of gratitude, my friends.

We got a few more essays in, for which I am grateful.

I will post the first due date on Monday. I meant for it to happen today, but instead of that, we read.

We got to the end of Chapter 4 in the text and were assigned questions 1-5 from the unit.

Thurs Sept 22

And so today ....

Today I collected essays. A good percentage handed in. Always glad to see that.

Then we read. We got to page 26 of the text.

Then we got homework: questions 1,2 and 3 from the unit outline we got yesterday.

(a few extra copies at the front of the room)

Due dates to be posted tomorrow!

Monday and Tuesday Sept 20

Whoa, my apologies for not updating this online area every day.

The last two days have been fairly exciting in my class - we are writing an essay (see rubric below) and getting the next unit on a novel started.

See the Six Steps of Writing an essay - we are going Step Five on Tuesday and Step Six on Wednesday!

Friday Sept 16

Actual photograph from class ... maybe.

My apologies for a late update - my usual habit of updating this blog at the end of the day was interrupted Period 4 on Friday. I had to cover another teacher's class.

On Friday we did mainly one on one's for the essay writing we are doing. Some great ideas were forthcoming in these sessions!

I also gave a bit of an update on what's coming next week, too.

Sept 13

Today we read the last story of the unit - it was "The Looking Glass" by Aton Chekov. What a cool story.

Due dates were posted by the end of class and appear on the side of this blog - note ... if you are on a mobile device, you need to go to the bottom of the page and click on the "Web Version" to see the sidebars on this blog.

Today was the first day of essay writing, too!

Tuesday Sept 13

Today was a very good day in class - we took up the homework on the story "A taste of melon".

We needed to get to a great piece of reading - we read Chapter 5 of the novel Frankenstein. What. A. Read.

In any case, I also did a quick check of the assignments that should be coming in by the end of the week and they looked mostly proficient.

Keep up the work!

Monday Sept 12

We got the homework on "The Interlopers" and were asked to do the terms for that story together, too.

While we were taking up the work for that, we made mention of this movie .....

Then we read the story "A taste of Melon" by Borden Deal. What. A. Story.

The day itself was interrupted a few times with students leaving to get their pictures done down in the gym. Ah well, it happens.

I also made an announcement in class about people looking for volunteers - and a great way to get your volunteer hours done for your diploma!

...and so it begins ....

If you are reading this, well, congratulations! You are in my Period 3 English class.

My goal for this blog is to help educate and keep students up to date with what went on in class that day. I'm also hoping to post helpful links for writing, OSSLT prep and research for class assignments.

For example, today we chatted briefly about the literary terms we need to know to do well in this class. After that, we read the short story "The Interlopers" by Saki. We also have homework on the story to complete as well.

"The way to begin is to begin"
